The Weekly Prep Setup: A Trader's Blueprint for XAUUSD

The Weekly Prep Setup: A Trader's Blueprint for XAUUSD

The Setup Before the Setup

In forex trading, we often think of a "setup" as a specific pattern on a chart—a bullish order block, a break of structure, or a perfect entry model. But as professional traders know, the most profitable setups aren't found on a Monday morning chart; they are meticulously built over the weekend. This is the process that separates professional traders from market spectators.

In his recent market insight, David Perk emphasizes a critical idea: your trading week is won or lost based on the work you do before the market even opens. The chart you see on Monday should not be a mystery to solve, but a map you've already drawn. This preparatory work is the real setup. It's a structured approach to analyzing the market's past and defining its potential future, turning a reactive gamble into a proactive business.

Let's break down this essential "Weekly Preparation" setup, which consists of two distinct but connected phases: the Saturday Review and the Sunday Prep.

Phase 1: The Saturday Review - Closing the Books

The first part of this setup involves looking backward with total honesty. Many traders skip this because they either fear confronting their mistakes or falsely believe that P&L is the only metric that matters. This is a costly error.

The Saturday Review is about dissecting your performance against your plan, not your account balance.

  • Score Your Trades: Go through every trade from the past week. Did it meet your written rules? A profitable trade that broke your rules is a bad trade. A losing trade that followed your rules perfectly is a good trade. This distinction is vital for long-term consistency.
  • Journal Your Behavior: Where did you hesitate? Where did you add risk impulsively? Where did you ignore your checklist? Your journal should be a record of your psychological state, not just entry and exit prices. This is the data that a true trading coach uses to help you improve.
  • Close the Platform: Once the review is done, shut it down. The week is over. This mental reset is crucial to prevent emotional baggage from carrying over into the next week.

Phase 2: The Sunday Prep - Drawing the Map

With the old week closed, Sunday is for looking forward. This is where you build your operational blueprint for the week ahead, especially for a volatile instrument like XAUUSD. This preparation ensures your decisions are based on a pre-defined plan, not in-the-moment emotion.

The key components of the Sunday Prep include:

  • Higher-Timeframe (HTF) Context: Before looking at hourly charts, what are the monthly, weekly, and daily charts telling you? Trading against the HTF bias is like swimming against a strong current—a low-probability endeavor.
  • Marking Key Levels: This is the technical groundwork. Identify and mark critical price points on your XAUUSD chart: the previous week's high and low, major order blocks (OBs), unmitigated fair value gaps (FVGs), and obvious pools of liquidity (equal highs/lows).
  • Building a Narrative: Based on the HTF context and key levels, write down what the market needs to do to trigger your involvement. For example: "If XAUUSD respects the weekly order block and sweeps last week's low, I will look for a bullish CLS setup on the lower timeframe." This narrative also includes what would invalidate your bias.

This entire process—the review and the prep—is the true setup. When you arrive at your desk on Monday, you're not searching for a trade; you're waiting for the market to confirm one of the scenarios you've already planned for. This is the foundation of professional forex education and the path to consistent trading.
