XAUUSD Analysis: The Liquidity Sweep Before the Rally

The Anatomy of a High-Probability XAUUSD Trade
In the world of forex trading, charts tell a story. For the untrained eye, price action can look like a series of random, chaotic movements. But for a trader equipped with a solid framework, these movements reveal a narrative of liquidity and intent. A recent analysis of an XAUUSD (Gold) chart provides a perfect case study of this principle in action.
This wasn't a trade based on a simple pattern or indicator. It was a trade built on a foundational market concept: price moves from liquidity to liquidity. Let's break down what the chart showed and why the subsequent move made so much sense within the CLS strategy framework.
Identifying the Liquidity Pool
Before the significant upward move, price had formed a series of lows. In the context of market dynamics, these lows are not just random price points. Below them lies a pool of resting orders—specifically, sell-stop orders from traders who are long, and breakout sell orders from traders anticipating a move lower.
This area is what we refer to as sell-side liquidity. The market, driven by large institutional flows, has a natural incentive to move toward these zones to facilitate large orders. The first step in this analysis was simply recognizing that a significant pool of liquidity was building below the recent price action.
The Manipulation: Sweeping the Lows
The pivotal moment on the chart was when price aggressively pushed down, breaking below the previously established lows. To a breakout trader, this looks like a clear signal to go short. They see the break of support and jump in, expecting the price to continue plummeting. However, this is often a trap.
As the TradingView idea notes, "The breakout you chased was the liquidity." The move was not the start of a new downtrend. It was a deliberate manipulation—a 'stop hunt'—designed to trigger those resting orders. Once this liquidity was captured, the market's true intention was revealed.
Confirmation: The Strong Close and Displacement
After sweeping the lows, price didn't linger. It reversed sharply and closed with significant strength back above the area it had just broken. This powerful move away from the liquidity zone is called displacement. It signifies that the purpose of the downward move (capturing liquidity) was complete and a new directional bias was taking hold.
This action created a key technical footprint: a new H4 Order Block. The last bearish candle before the aggressive up-move was completely engulfed by a bullish candle. This signaled a structural shift from bearish to bullish, providing a clear area of interest for a potential entry. The trade idea wasn't to chase the breakout but to wait for this entire sequence: the sweep, the reversal, and the confirmation.
The Target: The Next Liquidity Pool
With the setup confirmed, where does price go next? Back to the first principle: it moves to the next pool of liquidity. On the chart, a clear double top had formed earlier. Above this double top lies buy-side liquidity—stop-loss orders from short sellers and breakout orders from buyers.
This became the logical target for the trade. The move was a textbook example of price sweeping external range liquidity (the lows) to then target liquidity on the other side of the range (the highs). The entry was defined, the stop loss was placed safely below the manipulated low, and the target was clear. This kind of clarity is what separates professional analysis from guessing, and it's a core component of high-level forex education.
