How to Trade Gold: A Step-by-Step Guide to Liquidity Sweeps

A Practical Framework for Trading XAUUSD
Trading Gold (XAUUSD) can be intimidating. Its volatility can lead to big wins, but it can also lead to quick, painful losses, especially for those who trade without a plan. One of the most common mistakes is chasing breakouts, only to get stopped out as price violently reverses.
Based on a recent XAUUSD analysis rooted in the CLS strategy, we can build a practical, step-by-step guide to trading structures like this. This isn't a signal service, but a repeatable process that prioritizes precision over prediction. If you want to learn forex trading effectively, mastering a process like this is crucial.
Step 1: Identify the Playing Field (The Range and Its Liquidity)
Before you even think about placing a trade, you need to understand the market's current environment. Look at your chart (a higher timeframe like the 4-hour is great for this) and identify the current trading range.
- Mark the Highs: Find the recent swing highs. Above these levels lies buy-side liquidity (stops for shorts, buy orders for breakout traders).
- Mark the Lows: Find the recent swing lows. Below these levels lies sell-side liquidity (stops for longs, sell orders for breakout traders).
In the provided example, price had established clear lows. This was the first piece of the puzzle—knowing where the market was likely to hunt for orders.
Step 2: Wait Patiently for the Manipulation (The Sweep)
This is the hardest part for most traders: doing nothing. Your job is not to predict if price will take the liquidity, but to wait for it to happen. Don't try to short a breakout below the lows or buy a breakout above the highs. Instead, watch for the sweep.
A sweep occurs when price pushes through a key high or low, triggers the orders resting there, and then quickly fails to continue in that direction. This move can be just a long wick or a candle that closes back inside the range. As the original idea states, "No manipulation = no trade." If the market offers a clean, easy breakout that just keeps going, it wasn't your setup. You must wait for the trap to be set.
Step 3: Look for Confirmation (The Market's Reaction)
Once the liquidity sweep occurs, the market will show its hand. You are looking for a strong, energetic move in the opposite direction. This is called displacement.
In the XAUUSD example, after sweeping the lows, price reversed with a powerful bullish engulfing candle on the H4 chart. This is your confirmation. It tells you that the downward move was likely a raid on liquidity and the real intention is to go higher. This reaction often leaves behind a clear footprint, such as an Order Block, which becomes your point of interest for an entry.
Step 4: Define Your Trade Plan (Entry, Stop, and Target)
With the setup confirmed, you can now build a precise trade plan. This is where a trading coach can provide immense value, helping you refine your execution.
- Entry: You can look to enter as price retraces back toward the origin of the strong move (e.g., the Order Block created after the sweep).
- Stop Loss: Your invalidation is crystal clear. The stop loss goes just below the low point of the liquidity sweep. If price goes back there, your trade idea was wrong, and you exit with a small, defined loss.
- Target: Where is the next major pool of liquidity? Look back at your Step 1 analysis. In the example, a double top was the obvious target. Price moves from one liquidity pool to the next.
By following these steps, you shift from a gambler chasing price to an analyst executing a well-defined plan. This process-oriented approach is fundamental to long-term success and a cornerstone of any quality forex education.
