How to Avoid Bull Traps in BTCUSD Step-by-Step

How to Avoid Bull Traps in BTCUSD Step-by-Step

Don't Get Caught Buying the Top

One of the most common and costly mistakes in trading is the bull trap: buying into what looks like a strong breakout, only to see the price reverse and stop you out. It’s frustrating, but there's a systematic way to avoid it. Using a recent BTCUSD chart as our guide, let's walk through the exact steps to identify and sidestep these traps.

This practical, how-to guide is based on a core rule from the CLS strategy, which helps traders focus only on high-probability opportunities.

Step 1: Identify a True Market Range

Before you can assess an entry, you need to understand your playing field. A valid range isn't just any two points on a chart. As I outlined in my TradingView idea, a "Dealing Range" is formed with specific criteria:

  • Find a liquidity sweep: Look for where price has recently moved above a significant swing high and below a significant swing low.
  • Spot the expansion: After taking liquidity on both sides, watch for a strong, clear move in one direction. This entire leg, from its low to its high, is your new Dealing Range.

Don't proceed until you have this range clearly marked on your chart. It's the foundation for everything that follows.

Step 2: Divide Your Range into Premium & Discount

This step is simple but powerful. Take your Dealing Range and find the 50% equilibrium level.

  • The Upper Half is "Premium": This is the expensive zone. Logically, this is a better area to look for sells, not buys.
  • The Lower Half is "Discount": This is the cheap zone. This is where we want to be looking for potential long (buy) opportunities.

This mental model shifts you from chasing momentum to strategically buying low and selling high within a defined structure.

Step 3: Assess Your Entry Signal in Context

Now, you see it—a big, beautiful bullish candle. This is the moment of truth. Before you click "buy," ask yourself one question:

"Where did this candle form?"

In our BTCUSD example, the strong candle appeared squarely in the premium (upper) half of the range. Despite looking like a sign of strength, its location makes it a trap. The CLS strategy rule is simple and non-negotiable:

A valid buy signal in the premium zone is a pass. A valid sell signal in the discount zone is a pass.

By following this rule, you automatically filter out low-probability, high-risk trades. You are refusing to buy at an expensive price, which is where inexperienced traders are often providing liquidity for smarter money to sell.

Step 4: Wait for Price to Come to You

By passing on the trade in the premium zone, you've done the hard part: you've exercised discipline. The next step is to wait. For a high-probability buy setup to materialize, you would need to see price trade down into the discount (lower) half of your range before showing a valid entry signal.

This step-by-step process transforms you from a reactive trader into a patient and strategic one.
