How to Spot Liquidity Hunts on BTCUSD: A Step-by-Step Guide

A Practical Guide to Identifying Range Hunts on BTCUSD

Trading BTCUSD effectively requires more than just following trends; it demands an understanding of market manipulation and liquidity. One of the most common and powerful patterns is the 'liquidity hunt,' where price appears to break out, only to reverse sharply.

Based on a recent analysis by our head trading coach, David Perk, let's walk through a simplified process for spotting these setups. This guide will help you shift your perspective from chasing price to reading the story it tells.

Step 1: Look for the "Footprint," Not Just a Big Candle

Your first task is to stop seeing every large candle as a signal to trade. Instead, you need to look for context. As David mentions in his idea, the market leaves a "footprint." This means you should be looking for a period of consolidation or a specific candle that stands out not just for its size, but for its position within the market structure. This candle will serve as your potential range.

Step 2: Tentatively Define the Range

Once you've identified a candle that you believe is significant, mark its high and low. This is your tentative range. According to the CLS strategy, this isn't a random process. There are specific conditions that make a candle valid. While we can't cover all the proprietary rules here, a good starting point is to look for a candle that precedes a significant market move or one that forms at a key structural level.

  • Action: Draw two horizontal lines—one at the high of your chosen candle and one at the low.

Step 3: Wait Patiently for "The Hunt"

This is where discipline comes in. Your job is not to trade inside the range. Your job is to wait for the market to show its hand. You are waiting for price to trade past one of your lines.

David's idea title says it all: "A Wick Past the Line Is the Hunt." You are looking for price to pierce through your line, not close decisively beyond it. This quick poke is often designed to trigger the stop-loss orders of breakout traders and range traders.

Step 4: Identify the Confirmation Wick

The signal you're looking for is a candle that closes back inside your range, leaving a prominent wick sticking out past your line.

  • If price poked above the high: You're looking for a candle to close back below the high, leaving a long upper wick.
  • If price poked below the low: You're looking for a candle to close back above the low, leaving a long lower wick.

This wick is your evidence that the breakout was likely fake. The 'hunt' for liquidity is complete, and a reversal is now a high-probability outcome.

Step 5: Plan Your Trade (The Professional Step)

Identifying the pattern is only half the battle. A professional trader, often guided by a forex mentor, would then use this information to define a clear trade plan: a precise entry, a logical stop loss (perhaps just beyond the extreme of the wick), and a clear target. This transforms a simple observation into an actionable, risk-managed trade idea. To truly master this, you need to learn forex trading within a structured framework.
