The CLS Strategy: How We Read the XAUUSD Chart

The CLS Strategy: How We Read the XAUUSD Chart

Decoding the Chart with a Proven Method

To the untrained eye, a forex chart is a random series of up and down movements. But to a trader equipped with a robust methodology, it's a story of buying and selling pressure, of liquidity and intent. The CLS strategy, taught in our forex course, provides a systematic way to read this story.

Let’s use the recent XAUUSD chart idea from David Perk to illustrate how the CLS (Consolidation, Liquidity, Structure) strategy analyzes price action, turning a common retail trap into a high-probability trading opportunity.

C is for Consolidation: Identifying the Range

All significant market moves begin from a period of consolidation or ranging. This is where orders are accumulated and the market builds energy for its next leg. The first step in the CLS strategy is to identify this range.

On the XAUUSD chart, we can see price trading within a defined area, creating clear highs and lows. This consolidation phase is crucial because it establishes the boundaries where liquidity will eventually build up. These boundaries become our points of interest.

L is for Liquidity: The Target

As the TradingView post states, "Liquidity is the reason price moves." Once a range is established, predictable pockets of liquidity form above the consolidation highs (buy-stops) and below the consolidation lows (sell-stops). The CLS strategy is built around the idea that the market will likely attack one of these liquidity pools before making its real move.

Our analysis focuses on identifying the most obvious high or low. This level becomes our target for a "liquidity sweep." We are not trying to trade from this level; we are anticipating it being run. This single mindset shift, taught extensively in our trading course, is what separates our approach from conventional support and resistance trading.

S is for Structure: The Confirmation

This is the final and most crucial piece of the puzzle. We've seen the consolidation and anticipated the liquidity sweep. Now we need confirmation that the sweep was a stop hunt and not a genuine breakout. This confirmation comes from a shift in market structure.

  • After a sweep of a high (a bullish trap): We wait for price to break down and create a lower low. This is the market telling us that sellers have taken control and the upward move was fake.
  • After a sweep of a low (a bearish trap): We wait for price to rally and create a higher high, indicating that buyers have absorbed the selling pressure and are now in command.

This market structure shift is our trigger. Only after we see this confirmation do we begin to look for a precise entry, often at a point of origin within the structural break. This three-step process—Consolidation, Liquidity, Structure—provides a clear, repeatable framework for analyzing any chart, on any timeframe. It moves trading from a guessing game to a disciplined, strategic process.
